Chatteris Library has moved to
Furrowfields Road from its temporary building in
New Road and houses a wide range of materials. The
services offered at the library range from the
lending of books, audio and video cassettes to the
availability of reference material and our
Community information database (the database houses
information concerning clubs, societies and local
council information). The library also has
photocopying and fax facilities plus a computerised
county-wide search system.
Shopping facilities in the town
are provided by a variety of local shops, from
greengrocers to butchers, florists and antique
dealers. March, Ely, Peterborough and Cambridge
offer shopping in major high street stores.
There are two supermarkets in
Chatteris; Co-op Pioneer and Somerfield. For a
wider selection there is Tesco, Lidl and a
Sainsbury's in nearby March.
George Clare Surgery is situated
on a new site off New Road. The site includes an
extra chemist, optician and nursing home. The
surgery also has three visiting nurses who provide
everything from antenatal care through to Age Well
services. The town is in easy reach of large
hospitals in Peterborough, Cambridge and
Huntingdon, which includes the Papworth Hospital.
There are a two dental practises (both private) in
Chatteris and an alternative medicine clinic.
The St. John Ambulance Brigade
have a thriving base in town situated in Eastwood.
The brigade can be seen at all local events and
also offer courses.
Chatteris is fortunate to have a
swimming pool which is located in Park Street. The
pool is privately owned and is a registered charity
run by three trustees. Residents of Chatteris can
have access to the pool through Season tickets or
as members of a group or organisation that has
hired the pool. There is no public or casual access
nor are there any lifeguards.The pool has a
friendly, relaxed atmosphere that helps to keep it
popular and is well maintained.
Wining and dining in Chatteris
ranges from traditional English food to the exotic
delights of India and China. There are at least six
pubs and hotels that cater for a wide range of
culinary tastes. These include the Honest John, the
Cock Inn, Cross Keys Hotel, Walk the Dog and George
Hotel. The town also boasts two Chinese and two
Indian food outlets as well as the traditional chip
shop.
